D+

Dean Homicki's design career took an intriguing turn from 2001 to 2003 when he ventured into a new line of lighting designs under the umbrella of his customisation service, D+. Over two years, Homicki crafted pendant lighting pieces that exuded a subtle grace, catering to residential and commercial applications.

His creations, including the pendant luminaires Albert, Beatrice, and Anna-P, featured sand-blasted acrylic pieces that elegantly fanned out. While the manufacturing process proved technically intricate, with a central core and tangent angular fans intricately locking in with teeth, the result was a visual delight, effortlessly pleasing to the eye.

Not limited to smaller lighting pieces, D+ secured a significant project in 2002 for a large residential complex. Homicki designed lighting fixtures that stood an impressive 2.4 meters tall and measured 600 mm wide. These fixtures retained the core elements found in the smaller counterparts, featuring interlocking fans that added a touch of sophistication.

The installation process for these fixtures was a testament to Homicki's meticulous attention to detail. Each lamp was suspended by stainless steel wires, cleverly concealed behind the ceiling plaster using custom-designed bolts. The grandeur of these fixtures was enhanced by including four substantial fluorescent tubes that descended from the centre, casting a magnificent and effortless illumination. This ambitious project brought Homicki's passion for large-scale architectural design even closer to fruition.

One noteworthy example of the impact of Homicki's lighting designs was his collaboration with Bates Smart Architects for the Telstra Corporation Offices in Melbourne Docklands in 2001. The 'Mini Albert' pendant light, crafted from sand-blasted white opaque acrylic, was a striking addition to the office space, seamlessly merging aesthetics and functionality.

Dean Homicki's foray into the world of lighting design through his D+ venture showcased his ability to create captivating pieces that merged technical intricacy with visual appeal. With each carefully designed pendant luminaire, Homicki drew closer to his vision of integrating his love for architectural design into large-scale projects.
